Why do young adults want to work at camp?
I'll be honest.... it's not for the money, and it's not for the schedule!
It’s not easy being a summer camp counselor. You've never been in the role of mom or dad, having to supervise 12 ten year olds over night before; filling their days and nights with endless activities, staying alert, watching out for that camper who gets bullied easily, or the shy girl who has trouble making friends. You also want to be attentive to the camper who is a little homesick.
So what's in it for you?
Ultimately, as a camp counselor, you learn to be a leader. You learn through the awkward moments, the unspoken tears, and the challenges that stretch you farther than you think you can manage. At Camps Connect you’ll get equipped to lead well and to make a difference in the lives of campers. You'll be refined by moments that define your strength - and you'll walk away better because of it. Ready to face the challenges that life can bring with a new strength and a new song. At Camps Connect we believe in the power of camp—and the amazing effect that being a staff member has on young adults who fill the roles of mentor, disciple, parent, and friend.
As a counselor, you will learn to put your needs last, and to love kids even when they may seem unlovable or disinterested. "Are you are interested in a challenging, rewarding, and fulfilling summer opportunity that's more than 'just a job'"? Then visit our website and read on!
"If seeing is believing then certainly living is experiencing. Enduring the weeks at camp with the children is incredible and trying but the reward outweighs the stress tenfold. The campers truly escape into themselves and is something they will never forget; this is the summer that they will crave to go back to for years to come."
- Taylor Horton, "Optimus Prime", 2014
Many young campers come back later to be counselors and say that’s because their leaders made such a huge difference in their lives; a difference that they want to share with new campers who are in need of camp magic. It's an encouraging word, a listening ear, the power of faith, and a mentor that accepts you and loves you for exactly who you are, that kids are looking for. As a counselor, there will be those moments when you have to say goodbye to kids you've grown exceptionally fond of, and made memories with that will last them for the rest of their lives. Then you can look back and realize how profound the week has been; and how much those kids have changed - how much you have changed - after just one week.
Yes, being a summer camp counselor is hard work. It demands much and isn't glamorous, but somehow you wouldn't trade anything for the experience of talking a nervous camper through the high ropes course, a million hugs, beaming smiles, and flickering campfires filled with tears of campers who never want to leave. You wouldn't want to miss watching a child gain new confidence, or having a dozen kids depend on you during a thunderstorm.
You have discovered what is meaningful in life. And what you could be doing to make the world a better place - one child at a time.
